Note to Self: You Are an Artist

It feels uncomfortable to call yourself an artist. There is that little voice whispering “imposter”, making it feel like claiming it is too bold or too much. And yet, the truth is simple: we are all artists.
An artist is anyone who creates with care, imagination, and intention. That does not mean your work needs to hang in a gallery or go viral online. It simply means you are bringing something into the world that did not exist before through skill, curiosity, or love.
As children, we are naturally encouraged to create. Our drawings get hung on the fridge, our paintings are shared with family, and our little sculptures are admired. I remember spreading papers and pencil crayons across the living room table, filling page after page with scribbles, shapes, and stories. We were free to create, to explore, and to imagine without questioning the worth of our creations.
But somewhere along the way, something changes… We “grow up” and our lives fill with responsibilities, deadlines, and distractions. Our creativity becomes an afterthought, pushed to the back, a luxury rather than a necessity. Being busy becomes a badge of honour, as if creating is somehow optional. Spoiler alert: it is still important! Engaging in creative activities as adults can reduce stress, boost problem-solving skills, improve mental health, and enhance our overall sense of wellbeing. Your imagination matters and your time spent nurturing it is important.

You are an artist when you draw, paint, shape clay, or play with Play-Doh at the kitchen table with your children. You are an artist when you cook and bake, turning ordinary ingredients into meals that delight and nourish. You are an artist when you dress yourself, mixing colours, textures, and accessories in ways that express who you are. You are an artist when you curate your home, arranging objects with care and creating spaces that feel beautiful, comfortable, and intentional. You are an artist when you write in your journal, capturing thoughts, memories, and dreams. You are an artist when you create playlists, shaping moods and emotions through sound. You are an artist when you practice gardening, shaping living things and watching them grow. You are an artist when you solve problems creatively, teach, guide, and play, nurturing curiosity while expressing your own. You are an artist when you design a photo album, fold laundry in a way that feels satisfying, wrap a gift thoughtfully, craft a handmade card, or create a brand and website from scratch, bringing a vision into life. You are an artist when you rearrange furniture, mix scents in a candle, experiment with a new recipe, or plan your day with intention and care. Anything that involves imagination, intention, and creation done by your hands, heart, or mind is art.
Here is the truth worth remembering: Art does not need an audience. You do not need likes, shares, or approval to justify your creativity. You create because it brings you joy, clarity, and connection to yourself. You create even if you are not good at it. You create every day, even in small quiet ways, because honouring your creativity is honouring yourself.
So today, remember this. You are an artist. Your art is yours to make just for you. Make it imperfect. Make it messy. Make it beautiful in the way only you can. In doing so, you are living fully, intentionally, and joyfully, because that is what it means to be alive, to be human, and to be an artist.
